A detailed look at this important battle from the Red Army standpoint, using the official history and backing it up with additional information and maps. A welcome corrective to most studies that cover the battle solely from the Wehrmacht point of view.

Even though I've read "The Korsun Pocket" and "Hell's Gate" and am eminently appreciative of the later, I still bought this book for I wanted to read a primary source, the Soviet version of the encirclement and escape attempt by the two German Corps.
I'm happy I bought the book but was a little surprised at how anemic this Soviet study was. There are only 86 pages of the Soviet study; the rest of the book is supplemental info brought to you by Mr Glantz and Mr Orenstein.

The Soviet study is concise but serious and noteworthy. Its interesting to hear from a primary source; you receive insight that even the other two books didn't mention or only implied. You read what the Soviet commanders in the field and in Moscow were thinking at the time of the campaign. You also read the criticism and analysis by the Soviet planners on what went wrong or at least didn't work as well as anticipated and how to improve it for future engagements. There was very little propaganda or Communist posturing; it was all solid military planning and execution.
There were only four chapters to the study: The initial assault and pocketing of the German forces, the techniques for reducing the pocket, the German reaction and the last chapter deals with the impact of the Soviet Air Force had on the campaign.

Following the study, Glantz supplies information that the study didn't. For example documentation going between Moscow and the field commanders, presentation of tactical data, engineering responsibilities, logistic concerns, Order of Battle, German Armor strengths and 30 additional maps beyond what the study supplied. The maps are difficult to read but the collective series of maps does present a clear and enlightening progression of the encirclement of the German forces. The second defense line is also shown to repel the expected relief column.
For me, this book was an extravagance but it was worth it for it gives a new angle from the other two books. If you're happy with the other books then don't feel compelled to buy this one; but if you have a need to know all there is about this campaign then this book is definitely worth getting.

This is a translation of the Soviet General Staff work. Much of the information is outdated. The appendices are reproduced some of the myths about the size of the Soviet grouping. It should read and compare with Bieshanov and Moshchansky

This is a short but fascinating glimpse into Soviet operational planning during late WW2, and it is certainly a good accompanyment to other books on the Korsun battle. If you want the detailed day to day history of the battle then read Hells Gate or Zetterling's Korsun Pocket, but having read those books, if you want to know about the work of the Soviet engineers, cavalry, air force or ground transport organizations then buy this. The biggest disappointment to me, and this is probably because I bought the cheaper paperback version, are the situational maps in the appendix. Glanz is often criticized for his maps, but these appear to be a wonderfully crisp and detailed overview of the battlefield at 1900 hours each day; I say "appear to be" because in my book they are compressed to the point where you need a magnifying glass to read any labels - if the hardback book has the maps in a larger format then that is a good reason to spend the extra bucks on it.

Book is written after the operation when russian forces surrounded german forces in this pocket. The operation shows what and how the russian planned this operation. The germans did break out and suffered many losses. The russian explain the conduct of their operation which suffered many loses during this operation.
